Cash Registers-how a simple machine can help you with sales

Cash registers made their way in Point of Sale in 1800s and have since come a long way. Business owners who do not wish to invest in POS Systems find cash registers easy to manage their small to medium businesses. Cash registers consist of keyboard that is used to input entries, a drawer to hold cash (notes and coins) and a printer. It indicates the amount of each sale and records the amount of cash received. Businesses that use barcodes on their products have barcode scanners that can be attached to the cash register. The person using cash register at the counter can key in the products and look for PLUs (Price looks ups) against the products. She/he could even scan products using a scanner which enters the price of a particular product being scanned.

Cash registers are attached to cash drawers which have coins and notes sections to secure cash. A printing device for printing receipts is attached to the cash register. Additional accessories like credit card readers, customer display units etc. can be added to a cash register depending upon the requirement of the business.

Cash registers require programming. However, basic to midlevel cash registers can be programmed using the manual provided with the machines. Journal printing and printing daily reports is possible in cash registers. The keyboards could be either flat or raised or a mix of both. Graphics and logo printing is possible in midrange cash registers which also offer 1000 plus Price Look Ups (PLUs) and over 99 groups.
